ULFA militants serve extortion letters to traders -
Assam businessmen scared
Guwahati - December 14, 2003 - In a "confidential memorandum" to the chief
minister Mr. Tarun Gogoi, the apex body of the business community said:
"There are reports that a banned extremist organization has stepped up its
activities particularly in Upper Assam district. We have learnt from various
sources that it has served extortion notices to a large number of people.
This has unleashed a sense of fear and insecurity in the minds of the
business community and have also eroded their confidence in the law and
order machinery." The memorandum pointed out: "In most of the cases business
community has to bear the brunt from both the end, first by being forced to
pay ransoms and extortion demands under threat to their lives and later on
by the police on charges of abetting unlawful activities."
